Summer Workshop
with James N. Frey and Barbara McHugh

June 20th to 27th, 2009

The Workshop: Both Jim and Barbara will be conducting workshop sessions. We will have morning and evening workshops daily, where participants' stories are read aloud and critiqued. Despite the rumors, you will not need to wear body armor. In addition to the workshops, Barbara will be doing individual conferences with each participant to discuss a sample of his or her work (limited to 2000 words) and there will be some afternoon craft lectures for survivors of the morning workshop. Last year, a gaggle of masochistic workshop junkies demanded more workshop time, so we had a volunteer workshop at six in the morning out by the pool as the fog rolled in.

This year’s writing contest will be to create an opening sentence for an egregiously overwritten novel, suitable for submission to the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. These will be read at the Friday night party. Enter a bunch of them if you’d like.

This workshop is for fiction writers of any genre or form. You should have at least written a big chunk of a novel, a few plays or screenplays, or several short stories. No raw beginners, please.

The Place: The workshop will be held at a private home in the Santa Cruz Mountains halfway between the cities of San Jose and Santa Cruz, California. No, it is not haunted by the ghosts of past participants, no matter what you may have heard. The home is 5600 Sq. ft. of contemporary architecture, on 21 redwood-forested acres with breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. Nearby are hiking trails, bike trails, and a couple of great state parks. Although it will be necessary for everyone to have a roommate or two, the bedrooms are large and comfortably furnished. Bedding and towels will be furnished. We supply the beer and wine, but you will need to bring your own valium. No smoking. Smokers are asked to move 100 yards up the bear trail.

There are two very friendly Weimaraner dogs in residence. If you're allergic to dogs, this workshop is probably not for you.

Transportation: If you wish to fly to San Jose, we will arrange transportation from the airport to the workshop and back at no charge

Cost: $850. The fee includes the workshop, lectures, lodging, meals, and bandages. A $200 deposit is required, with the balance due on May 20th. No refunds will be given after May 20th unless a replacement participant is enrolled.

Do not sign up if you cannot make a firm commitment to be present for the entire workshop.

To Register: Please contact Jim for approval: email jnfrey@yahoo.com or call 510-882-0610. James N. Frey events require advance registration, and can fill up very quickly. We must reserve places on a first-come, first-served basis, so your place in a class cannot be guaranteed until we receive your payment.
